Crack Green Beans

This Crack Green Beans recipe is a lighter version of Southern smothered green beans. Canned green beans are baked in the most delicious, sweet and savory sauce made with soy sauce, maple syrup and butter topped with crisp bacon.

Ingredients

  • 3 cans cut green beans 15 ounce, low-sodium or no salt added
  • 6 slices bacon
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • ¼ cup pure maple syrup
  • 3 tablespoons soy sauce low-sodium or regular
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • Cook bacon. Cut raw bacon slices into small bits and cook them in a skillet. Once browned and crispy, take the bacon bits out with a slotted spoon and place on a paper towel to catch excess grease. Set aside.
  • Make the sauce. Melt the butter in a small saucepan or in the microwave, add soy sauce, maple syrup, garlic powder and onion powder and mix well.
  • Drain the beans in a colander to get rid of all liquid and transfer to a casserole dish.
  • Pour the sauce over the prepared green beans and mix with a spoon or spatula until the beans are evenly coated.
  • Top with cooked crispy bacon. I like to place the bacon bits around the casserole dish, much like you would arrange crispy onions around the green bean casserole. If you prefer, you can sprinkle them all over the beans though.
  • Place in the preheated oven and bake for 40 minutes. Remove from the oven and serve right away.

Notes

For gluten free use tamari instead of soy sauce.
To make this dish paleo friendly, swap soy sauce of coconut aminos and increase the amount to ¼ cup.
You can use fresh or frozen green beans in this recipe but make sure to cook them until very tender so that they can soak up the sauce.
