Boba (Tapicoca Pearls)

Instructions

  • To make boba pearls, bring 3 cups of water to boil. Add dry boba pearls and boil for 5 minutes or according to instructions on the package. Drain on a colander and rinse thouroughly under cold water. Transfer to a small bowl or glass, add 1 teaspoon of maple syrup or agave, mix to coat and set aside.
  • To make the tea, place the tea leaves in a tea infuser or a disposable tea filter bag. Place the infuser or tea bag in a tall glass.
  • Pour 1 ½ cup of boiling water over and let steep for at least 3 minutes, or longer.
  • If you want the tea to be sweet, add 1-2 teaspoons of maple syrup or agave and stir.
  • Place the hot tea in the fridge or leave on the counter to cool to room temperature.
  • Place ½ cup of prepared tapioca pearls in a 16 oz glass. Pour in the cooled tea, ice cubes and milk.

  • Enjoy immediately. Use a wide straw to slurp up the boba pearls.

Notes

Note 1: You can but Thai loose leaf tea in Asian markets or on Amazon. It's usually a blend of back tea, red rooibos tea, spices and sweet flavors, such as vanilla.
Note 2: I used the brown sugar flavored boba that I buy on Amazon.
Note 3: Any milk will work. I like 2% lactose free dairy milk in tea but feel free to swap it for whole milk, coconut milk, oat milk, almond milk etc.
Note 4: This recipe makes 1 serving. If you're making more, use the scale (x2, x3, x4) in the recipe card above. In case of more servings, it's better to steep the tea in a larger container, such as a tea kettle.
Note 5: Cooling the tea takes time so I recommend making it ahead of time and storing the cold tea in the fridge until you're ready to assemble your bubble tea.
Note 6: This tea can also be served warm. If that's how you like it, skip the cooling and ice cubes.
